Building future Champions
Rosebank Business Association and Avondale Athletics have been able to forge a special relationship to help develop the raw and natural athletic talent within the local community. With the help of generous businesses, we could secure professional coaching for 10 targeted athletes. A team of 5 throwers under the guidance of Louisa Karena, (herself an Auckland Junior Throws record holder); and a further team of 5 sprinters/jumpers under the guidance of Matt Wyatt, the current men’s 100m and Long Jump champion. Adele Griffin from GO Fitness complements the training with strength and conditioning for the whole team.
Already, the results have shown, with Roman Viney breaking the 12 Boys Club High Jump record very early in the season. Following this, we had Joshua Saluni breaking the 12 Boys Long Jump record as well. Kaila Ru successfully took the silver medal in the Junior Discus recently at the NZ Secondary Schools Championship held at Waitakere Stadium. Further to this success, the team recently participated in the Auckland Junior Relay Championships at Mt Smart Stadium, with the 12-Boys team (which includes Lex Revell-Lewis, Joshua Saluni and Tod Sloan) taking Silver medals in both the 4x100m Relay and the 4x200m Relay. The 14 Girls Field team which consists of Vika Aho and Kaila Ru, also took a Silver Medal for their throws performances.
And the most recent development – we had many of the team take part in the Western Club Challenge, with Avondale winning the cup for the very first time. Avondale Athletics Club competed against the Lynndale, Te Atatu, Massey and Glen Eden Athletics Clubs. An historical victory for such a small club based at a local public park with limited resources.
We are grateful for the support of the RBA and the associated businesses – IC Frith, KAAR, Willory Agencies, Holdson, Guala Closures, Bunnings Trade – we could not do what we do without your support and your shared vision. We look forward to showcasing our further success as the entire Avondale Athletics Performance Academy team compete over the rest of the summer. GO AVONDALE!!
