Financial markets remain becalmed. There has been a steady stream of data that points to some degree of stability returning. In that sense, markets are relieved that the data is not uniformly worse. But the world is a long way from a strong recovery yet, even as equity markets are testing higher. A number of indicators remain at the lows, not the least official interest rates. Shipping costs, a measure of actual goods demand (see chart below) remain close to their post Lehman lows.

Markets sobered up a bit last week as various bits of data gave food for thought and caused some consolidation. The S&P 500 slipped 0.5%, the Dow fell 1.2% and the German DAX fell 2.7%. Chinese and European PMI data was poor, whilst US data was generally positive. But with the S&P 500 up some 30% from the lows of 1075 on 4th October last year, some caution is finally setting in.
